Champagnes

101         Delamotte Brut                                                                                                   NV                          £61.00

The house of Delamotte is more than 200 years old (the fifth oldest maison de Champagne) founded in 1760 by Francois Delamotte. The domaine lies next door to its sister estate, Salon, which makes one of Champagne’s most iconic wines. Both properties are run by General Manager, Didier Dupond and the winemaking os overseen by chef de caves, Michel Fauconnet. The wines are both made separately but in years in which Depond and Fauconnet decide to forgo making Salon, the wine is sometimes added to the Delamotte bottlings. A powerful but not aggressive blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier displaying a dry, elegant nose of white flowers, lemon peel with a fresh, vibrant palate of apples & lemons backed with structure and minerality on the finish.

BURGUNDY

309         St Aubin, 1er Cru, Dents des Chiens - 2002/03 – £45.90 - Olivier Leflaive

Olivier Leflaive St. Aubin - The hamlet of St. Aubin is famous for the surrounding vineyard’s consistently producing fine white Burgundy at approximately half the price of their more famous neighbours on Chassagne & Puligny Montrachet. The premier cru vineyards of En Rémilly and Dents de Chien (sometimes known as ‘Les Murgers des dents de chien’) in particular nestle comfortably next door to ‘Le Montrachet’ & ‘Chevalier Montrachet’ with the higher positioned Dents de chien, also backing onto the premier crus of ‘Champ Gains’ and ‘La Garenne’. With a brilliant pedigree like this, the wines, the comparisons are fascinating. Although Dents de Chien lies just yards away from En Rémilly, its soils are dramatically different and the vineyards, a lot older.. A more open and powerful wine, Dents de Chien offers fresh, ripe apple fruit, and an appealing richness and depth whilst the En Rémilly is a finer, more mineral wine that with age, has developed great intensity so similar to the premier crus of Puligny Montrachet.

312         Meursault, Cuvee Maurice Chevalier - 1998/99 – £57.70 - Remoissenet Père et Fils

The Cuvee Maurice Chevalier is a fine white burgundy delivering delicate fruit,

structure and length with an immaculate layer of minerality.

320         Bourgogne Rouge, Vieilles Vignes - 2008 – £48.90 - Domaine Pierre Labet

The Labet name is highly regarded as the family behind Château de La Tour. Similarly the wines of Domaine Pierre Labet, from the family’s 8.3 hectares of vineyards in Savigny, Meursault and Chorey in the Côte de Beaune, share the family’s reputed winemaking pedigree, based on organic farming and a meticulous approach in the vineyard and cellar alike. François Labet’s hands-on attitude carries through to his own-label wines, made with grapes sourced from small growers with old vines (those in Marsannay date from 1964 and 1979), and lavished with Labet’s kid-glove winemaking treatment. The wines offer a taste of the elegance and finesse of the grands vins which established the Labet name generations ago.

324         Clos Vougeot - 2000 – £245.00 – Ch. de la Tour

Clos de Vougeot is the largest grand cru in the Côte de Nuits, with over 100 parcels and around eighty owners. There is enormous diversity in terms of terroir – slopes, aspects, altitudes, drainage and underlying geology. Add to that the age of vines, methods of cultivation and winemaking and there is clearly a vast range of styles and qualities produced, all with the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru label. Château de La Tour, established in 1890, is the largest proprietor of Clos de Vougeot. With six hectares of vines, this covers 12% of the appellation, well sited and housing old and ancient vines, 50 years old on average, with the oldest having been planted in 1910. They have five parcels of vines, situated high up the slope, towards the renaissance manor, in the middle and a little on the lower slope –

a true representation of the Clos and a complex palette of ingredients.
