East Lothian Beer Festival

22Sep

ducks_beer_festival_2

Well we are just a week away now from our very first East Lothian Beer Festival in Aberlady and it has  certainly developed into a very exciting event. Sports fans dont forget we will also be showing this years Ryder Cup live on our Big screen as well our various TVs around our bar areas. In addition there will be BBQ running to help you digest the beer along side Donald’s Bistro so there will be something for everyone, families and drinkers alike.  On the Beer front we can confirm that Knops will be attending with a full compliment of 4 cask ales, Top Out Brewery and Cromarity Brewers are also arriving cask loaded along with many others on a smaller scale.

Many of you have asked about transport…..We are on the main 124, x24 bus route from Edinburgh City Centre to North Berwick. Train users can get a train to Longniddry which is a 30 minute walk beside the sea, along the John Muir Way or for groups of up to eight we can possibly arrange a pick up. We have also been offered a unique taxi transport service by an Edinburgh based company called Scoot Ltd so we recommend checking out their website www.scootltd.co.uk to see if they can be of help.

The Ryder Cup @ Ducks

22Sep

ryder_cup_header

The last weekend of September may be a time when you start to think wooly jumpers, winter jackets and that horrible word Christmas but Ducks and the majority of golf fans in Scotland, East Lothian and world wide are thinking Gleneagles, Stephen Gallacher, Team Europe and of course The Ryder Cup….

Many of you who know Ducks but for those who don’t Duck’s is renowned amongst visitors to ‘Scotland’s Golf Coast’, Aberlady, East Lothian.  We have what golfers want, rooms, great food, beer, wines, whisky and cigars……Ryder Cup weekend we are also having a beer festival  and BBQ to go along side The Ryder Cup showing on the giant screen and the TVs

Friday and Saturdays play will clearly put us in the mood for the Sunday singles, who can forget Medinah……Fellow Scotsman and friend of The Duck Stephen Gallacher will bring added interest against the Americans however the Sundays Singles Shootout is when we expect a full capacity audience to cheer team Europe home to victory and who knows Malcolm may even have the champagne on ice to toast his Stephen and his team mates on a hopefully successful weekend for Team Europe!  We will show the entire tournament brought to us by Sky and commentary from former Ryder Cup Player, friend and local Aberlady villager Andrew Coltart,

Sadly this weekend is fully booked for accommodation however we will be taking bookings for food in both our Bistro and Ducks Fine Dining Restaurant for those wishing to make it a full days experience.  Entry to the Beer Festival and BBQ is free and does not require booking so please come down and enjoy the weekend.

Also Ryder Cup weekend sees us host our very first East Lothian Beer Festival so Golf, Food and Beer means Ryder Cup equals Ducks, one result no one will argue with

September Menu @ Ducks

September Menu at Ducks

September Menu @ Ducks

As we drift from away from Summer, and move toward a cooler, darker Autumn, our new Ducks Restaurant Menu has some dishes which can only be described as intriguing and mouth-watering.  The traditional opening of Amuse Bouche will vary on a day to day basis to keep you all guessing.

After an ever changing Amuse Bouche, starters will see a game variation with grouse flying in to join quails egg, blackberry and pea. Presented as a Scotch Egg, the quail egg is
enveloped by Grouse mince.  Pea is used in the dish both as a pannacotta and as part of the crisp with pancetta.  Throw in fresh blackberries and you have a mouth-watering starter.  For those who believe Salmon is the only way to start a delightful dinner then September sees Salmon Micuit, flavoured with Vanilla along with pickled Beetroot and accompanied by delicious, homemade lemon curd.

The fish theme continues into the main course with Sea Trout, pan fried and served with an artichoke puree, pumpkin fondant and finished with radish crisps and pumpkin seed dust.  How can you resist?!  The classic Pork Belly, always a Ducks favourite, makes an appearance this month with apple puree, buttered baby carrots and sliced apple.  This glorious dish is also served with a sherry jus and demonstrates just why Pork Belly is so popular in East Lothian!

Puddings are always a delight at Ducks and this month is no different!  Passion-fruit and green tea high on the flavours; the latter is part of a Dark Chocolate Parfait with Green Tea Sorbet accompanied with an amazing Blood Orange Gel – a must for pudding fans!  The passion-fruit comes in the form of a rum and passion fruit sorbet served in a Cocktail glass with a set custard.

Cool Reception back again

10Sep

CoolChristmas

After their great success at last years event Ducks have invited Cool Reception back again this year to end our year on a high note. We personally think they are amazing as do our previous guests and judging by comments below as do many others.

Cool Reception is a dynamic three piece live wedding and function band from Central Scotland featuring both female and male lead vocals and have performed at thousands of wedding receptions now for over 20 years. The band comes equipped with their own top class sound system and light show.
“We’ve never seen a dance floor full all night before!” (Melanie & Steve, wedding Berwick Upon Tweed)
Cool Reception – one of the most popular wedding bands Scotland has

The reason they are so popular for wedding entertainment is they cover all types of music from authentic Scottish ceilidh dances to the current charts, and are sure to keep your guests dancing the night away with hits from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today!
“Every one of the guests have raved about Cool Reception!”
(Alison & Douglas Boocock, wedding Norton House, Edinburgh)

So who are Cool Reception??? well here is a quick introduction to the band below…..

Iain – Drummer & Vocalist with Cool Reception

cool 1Self taught, Iain started drumming aged nine with two pieces of dowelling and a load of biscuit tins. Around 18 months later he was given access to an acoustic guitar which he managed to get a tune out of and taught himself guitar and then bass, forming his first band with some friends. Aged eleven and now guitarist and vocalist with the band, they entered and won their High School “Opportunity Knocks” competition.

The next few years were spent gigging locally, still with the band formed at school, and at the same time DJ-ing with the family mobile disco until he decided aged 16 to return to his preferred instrument, THE DRUMS!

He then spent a few years gigging with a different bands playing soul, blues and pop covers and also some projects recording original material. Iain joined his first function band in 1985, a talented trio who quickly became a favorite act performing on the local club circuit for a few years.

Wendy – Lead Vocalist & Percussionist with Cool Reception

cool 3Wendy has been singing since primary school and is also an accomplished dancer.

Following a successful spell on the Karaoke circuit in the early 90s (which helped fund a few nights out in her University days!) she found her way onto the live circuit in her home town of Penicuik.

Having joined a band performing covers and original material she then spent a few years gigging in and around Edinburgh singing both lead and backing vocals, including a few recording studio demos. During this time she developed into a mean tambourine player and now can shake it with the best of them!

Campbell – Guitarist & Vocalist with Cool Reception

cool 4After commencing a comprehensive instruction course in all styles of guitar playing at the age of twelve Campbell has been gigging since the mid 70’s with all types of bands including rock, pop, rock and roll, soul, funk and even punk rock.

In the 1980’s most of his work was in playing clubs and pubs covering well known pop and rock songs which helped fund him through University.Wedding and corporate function work was covered in the 1990’s with a couple of well known local bands.

He has been a member of Cool Reception since July 2006.

Sharon – Lead Vocalist with Cool Reception

Sharon began her singing career at the age of 6 treading the boards with her local drama company.

At the age of 20 she moved to the island of Jersey and began singing in the pubs and clubs to support her income. After 4 years she returned to her home town of Berwick Upon Tweed and after recording a charity CD was invited to join a popular Borders duo.

After 10 years with the Berwickshire duo she joined an East Lothian duo spending another 4 years gigging all over Scotland and the

Scottish Borders and as if she wasn’t busy enough during these 14 years, she managed to get married and have her two children!

Stewart Brewing attending East Lothian Beer Festival

02Sep

stewartbrewing

We are delighted to announce that Stewart Brewing will be attending our East Lothian Beer Festival

Stewart Brewing is an independent craft brewery based on the outskirts of Edinburgh in Loanhead, Midlothian. It was established in 2004 by Steve and Jo Stewart. It produces hand-crafted premium beer in small batches, which are available in approximately 200 real ale pubs in Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife, the Borders, Glasgow and Newcastle. It also sells mini casks and bottled beers from its brewery shop.

Its current cask beer range includes:

  • Pentland IPA (3.9%) A golden dry ale, with slight fruit tones and a moderate bitterness. Fresh hop cones are added in four stages to contribute a more complex character, resulting in an easy to drink ale that offers refreshment with a little extra spice.
  • Copper Cascade (4.1%) Copper Cascade is a deep red, full bodied, medium dry beer. It’s special character comes from the generous addition of North West American Cascade hops – a delightful hop with a spicy, floral, almost blackcurrant character.
  • Edinburgh No.3 (4.3%) A full bodied, smooth, cask conditioned ale, with an intense colour, rich malty taste and clean finish. Brewed using soft Scottish water, four types of malt, subtly balanced using only a small amount of the finest fresh hop cones.
  • Stewart’s 80/- (4.4%) Full bodied, full flavoured auburn coloured classic heavy that was originally brewed for the world famous Athletic Arms (Diggers) in Edinburgh. It’s easy drinking with aromas of malt, light hops & fruit to compliment it’s smooth and creamy texture.
  • Edinburgh Gold (4.8%) Refreshing, balanced and full of flavour. This is a captivating gold bier, sophisticated in taste and rich in colour. Edinburgh Gold boasts an attractive continental hop aroma with moderate bitterness and a pleasing smooth finish.

Alongside these there are always new monthly specials like: Summer Backbeat (4.8%), Forth Mist (3.9%), Zymic (3.8%), Cauld Reekie (6.2%), Three wise men (4.5%),Pumpkin ale (4.3%), Edinburgh Festival (3.9%) and Stewart’s rugby ale (4%)

Knops Beer Company attending our Beer Festival

02Sep

knops beer event

We are delighted to announce local East Lothian Beer producers Knops Beer Company will be attending our Beer Festival at Ducks in Aberlady, read all about the Archerfield based guys below.

Knops Beer Company was born out of a desire to explore the rich heritage and variety that beer has to offer and to brew beers that can appeal to all levels, from the experienced ale drinker to those who have never been lucky enough to discover the range and depth of this vibrant category.

Key to the concept is that the beers should have drinkability – the last impression should be even better than the first. Our modern interpretations of traditional beer styles are refreshing and flavourful, satisfying and more-ish but never fatiguing.

Our labels are inspired by vintage travel poster designs to reflect a sense of discovery and exploration. Our beers have old or alternative names for styles of beer.

Our job is not to criticize what other brewers do, be they large or small, but to celebrate beer in all it’s variety and encourage others to do the same.

Ducks Cocktail Night Review

01Sep

cocktailnightreview

273x500xMafia-Martini-273x500.jpg.pagespeed.ic.nPGnqh7_0EAs another month drew to a close it was cocktail event time again at Ducks and Augusts event was yet another statement of intent that Ducks are fast becoming East Lothians prime Cocktail venue. Amongst the sizzling Martini’s on offer Alan threw in some new style Jug Cocktails aimed at the ‘Ladies who lunch’ market some of which influenced by his local favourite NB Gin.

Mr Skinner’s favourite cocktail was the Woodford Crush. As someone who’s a big fan of mixing bourbon with apple juice (and if you’ve never tried this, especially when you’re eating ribs, you don’t know what you’re missing) Mr Skinner was impressed with the combination of Woodford Reserve, Archers, lemonade and lime. I suspect I’ll shortly have to suffer the indignity of adding a bottle of Archers to my Waitrose grocery shop to recreate this one at home.

Also on the menu was a preview of his Christmas Party suggestion ‘Mini Brandy Alexander’ bringing together a cocktail classic and a creamy hint of Christmas topped with nutmeg. However dont simply take our word for it as we also had the event covered for us by Edinburgh based food and Drink Bloggers Crumbs and Petals so feel free to read their review and get their personal thoughts on the event and venue
