Bread – generous baskets with proper, good bread – wasn’t brought to the table so ridiculously early that we’d gorged ourselves full before our delightful food arrived. One went native with venison (last tried with disastrous consequences in France in the 1980s) but this … this was sublime. Everyone else had monkfish and enjoyed it.
